Two IPSS Graduate Students Receive Research Proposal Funded
Two IPSS graduate students, Eric Luteyn and Kent Pham, recently received notification that their research proposal has been funded for this summer. Eric and Kent are working with students from forestry and chemistry to grow microalgae as a fertilizer to remediate mineland soil.

Eric Luteyn, M.S. student with Dr. Tim Phillips, was recently selected as a 2021 Borlaug Scholar based upon his accomplishments, academic performance, letter of recommendation, and passion for plant breeding.

IPSS Alumni's Article Selected as 2020 Outstanding Paper
Dr. Kenton Sena, IPSS alum, was recently selected for the 2020 Outstanding Paper in the Forage and Grazinglands Section for Crop, Forage & Turfgrass Management (CFTM) for his article entitled "Switchgrass Growth and Forage Quality Trends Provide Insight for Management."

PSS postdoc places first in UK GradResearch Live!
The University of Kentucky's GradResearch Live! is proving that excitement for research has no bounds. This year, because of the restrictions of COVID-19, the 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition moved online. In the span of just a couple of weeks, the 24 research presentations by graduate students and postdocs garnered more than 9,500 total views on YouTube.

IPSS Alum receives award from Yunnan Government
IPSS Alumni, Dr. Congming Zou, received an award from the Yunnan Government, recognizing him for his contributions to society and tobacco research. Dr. Zou was a Ph.D. student under Dr. Bob Pearce, with Dr. John Grove as his co-chair.

Plants provide comfort to UK student, disabled vet
Standing in a field of hundreds of varieties of teff at the University of Kentucky Spindletop Research Farm, graduate student Eric Luteyn is at peace studying the differences between the plants. After a decade of military service that ended in a medical discharge, peace is exactly what the disabled veteran needs.

2020 Karri Casner Environmental Sciences Fellowship
On May 1, 2020, Jarad Cochran was awarded the Karri Casner Environmental Sciences Fellowship. Jarad, who is a second year Ph.D. student under Dr. Olga Tsyusko, will use these funds to determine the toxicity of chitosan-coated iron nanoparticles on the model soil nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans. Additionally, he will assess the potential to treat antimicrobial resistant pathogens with these particles.

Three UK Students Receive USDA Predoctoral Fellowships
Tim Shull was one of three graduate students in the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment to have received a predoctoral fellowship from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
